IELTS

What is IELTS?

To be able to work, live or study in an English-speaking country, you must prove that you have obtained a high level of English language ability. One such test to verify your capabilities is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) which assesses your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English.

IELTS
Different types of IELTS exams

The IELTS Academic test is made for students looking to study in an English-speaking environment or university, as it uses vocabulary common in academic settings. IELTS can also be used for professional registration.

The IELTS General Training test is more appropriate for students applying to study at an undergraduate level. It can also be used for work experience or other job-related training since it covers conversational English skills. It is also used for migration purposes in some countries.

Format

The Listening and Speaking test formats are the same for all types of IELTS. The Listening test requires you to listen to four recordings, with ten questions for each, within 30 minutes. The Speaking test consists of an oral interview lasting 11-14 minutes.

The Reading test for IELTS consists of three reading passages with 40 questions to be solved within 60 minutes. However, the type of passages given for reading differs for academic and general IELTS. Similarly, the Writing test is different for both but includes two tasks to be written within 60 minutes.

Grading system

The scoring of the 40 questions is done by converting it to the IELTS nine-band scale. For example, a 35 on the academic reading test would be an eight on the IELTS scale. Hence, a five or below indicates a non-proficient user.
